1.1 Cleaning, Surface Preparation and Painting Requirements for Repair / Replacement of Head Overhead / Bulkhead Coating Systems.
Coating systems shall be applied by certified painters and test / inspection records maintained IAW the requirements of NSTM 631, Section 11.
The implementing contractor shall maintain a certification program for painters working on the project IAW NSTM 631, Section 11.5.
6.2.1 Power Tool Cleaning to Bare Metal: Accomplish the overhaul surface preparation requirements of Tables 631-1-3 and 631-11-1, (Surface Preparation), for the location/area being prepared.
Surface preparation accomplished using a surface preparation device such as a disk sander or power wire wheel that burnishes, polishes or smoothes the surface is not authorized.
6.2.2 Feather edges of well-adhered paint in adjacent areas remaining after cleaning.
6.3.1 Power Tool Cleaning: Accomplish overhaul surface preparation requirements of Table 631-11-1, (Surface Preparation), to roughen surface, remove loose mill scale, loose rust, loose paint, and other loose detrimental foreign matter for the entire location/area being prepared.
6.3.2 Power Tool Cleaning to Bare Metal: For areas with rust or coating damage that exposes bare substrate, accomplish the overhaul surface preparation requirements of Table 631-1-3 and 631-11-1, II (Surface Preparation).
